Where to stay in Paris?

Where you stay when you come to Paris all depends on what you want. The Champs-Elysées is OK if you like fancy, touristy, and overpriced. The Eiffel Tour area? It’s posh and mostly residential; not much action, zero nightlife.

Instead I would recommend the following areas:

the 5th (or 6th) – St. Michel/Latin Quarter/Notre Dame/St Germain.
the 9th – Theatre district, with charming 19th century covered shopping passages, the rue des Martyrs, and Pigalle not far away.
the 18th – Montmartre/Sacre Coeur. Old artists’ quarter…feels like a small village in the city. The Paris of your dreams!

Some hotels that might be of interest:

http://www.parisalbehotel.com/index.html – Right in the heart the Latin Quarter & across the bridge from Notre Dame. Do not know it personally, but it looks like a good one.

http://www.hotel-luxembourg.com/index.html – Never been here but NYT gave it rave reviews. Prices are very reasonable for the location.

http://www.hotelamourparis.fr/ — A very exclusive boutique hotel at a decent price. Tucked away on a quiet street just South of Pigalle in the 9th. I’ve been to the restaurant and it’s divine. They only take bookings over the phone and they fill up fast.

http://www.eldoradohotel.fr/ — A real bargain, I stayed here twice before I lived in Paris. It’s clean, modest, bohemian & a bit off the beaten track but close to the bustling Place de Clichy (Montmartre, Opera). Rooms are all uniquely decorated with treasures that the owners picked up on their trips around the world. The Bistrot des Dames below is also a gem.

http://www.hoteljules.com/ — Very cute! Totally renovated with unique vintage furnature & decorative touches. In the heart of the 9th, you just can’t beat the area! Staff are very friendly too.
